Methodology

How we get to our numbers

If you cannot see the assumptions, you cannot judge the answer. This page sets out how Housebright calculates, what it deliberately leaves out, and what we will never do.

Last reviewed: September 2026

Every figure here is an estimate

Our calculators use straightforward arithmetic on the figures you enter. They do not model weather variation, half-hourly consumption profiles, future energy prices or the specific behaviour of your equipment. That keeps the workings transparent, and it also means the output is an indication rather than a prediction.

Simple payback ignores the time value of money, finance costs, inflation, panel degradation, maintenance and eventual component replacement. It is a useful first filter, not a full financial appraisal. Nothing on Housebright is financial advice.

Our working rules

  1. 01Defaults are conservative and clearly labelled as assumptions, never as recommendations or predictions.
  2. 02Any figure that can change, such as a grant value or a tariff, carries a date stamp so you can judge how fresh it is.
  3. 03We name the type of source behind official figures, and we do not invent citations or links we cannot verify.
  4. 04We do not publish specific export or import tariff rates, because they vary by supplier and go stale quickly.
  5. 05We do not publish installer prices we have not sourced. A missing number is better than a fabricated one.
  6. 06Calculations run in your browser. We do not store the numbers you enter.
  7. 07We only advertise tools that work. If something is not published, it is not listed as though it were available.

No installer is ranked because they pay

Housebright does not sell placement in editorial conclusions. If and when we list or compare installers, the ordering will be based on stated criteria published alongside the list, and any commercial relationship will be disclosed on the same page.

We do not accept payment to change a recommendation, to remove a caveat, or to describe a technology as suitable for homes it does not suit.

Grants, schemes and dates

Support schemes differ across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and they change. Where we mention a scheme, we state which nations it applies to, the amounts as published, any end date, and the month we last checked it.

Always confirm the current position with the official source before making a financial decision. We would rather you checked us than trusted us.

Quote forms and commercial relationships

Housebright does not install equipment, does not employ installers, and does not currently operate a quote request service. If we introduce one, the page will say plainly what happens to your details, who receives them and what we are paid.

We will never run a form that implies your details are being sent to installers when they are not.

Corrections

If something here is wrong or out of date, we want to fix it rather than defend it. Where a dated official source is newer than our page, the official source wins. Our corrections policy is set out on the contact page.
